The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has expressed concern over over the failure of authorities to resolve a series of animal disappearances, accusing the state of maintaining a “prolonged absence of results.”
In an announcement issued on Monday, 09 February 2026, the party criticised the lack of progress in locating animals reported missing weeks ago. “The lack of clear and responsible information leads citizens to the worst thoughts about the fate of the animals and seriously affects the sense of justice and trust towards the competent authorities,” it group stated.
The outcry follows at least two reported incidents: the disappearance of a colony of cats from a Nicosia supermarket on 22 January 2026, and the disappearance of a female dog from Kofinou on 25 January 2026, which left behind two newborn puppies.
Despite formal complaints and what the group describes as “significant information provided by citizens,” no breakthroughs have been made. The Ecologists claim that these are not isolated cases, noting they are “recipients of a multitude of information showing that the disappearance of animals continues on a daily basis,” a trend they argue exposes the deep inefficiency of current protection mechanisms.
Activists argue that the current “indifference” creates an environment of impunity. The action group has called for an immediate and in-depth probe to ensure the full application of the law. “We call on the competent authorities to immediately and essentially assume their responsibilities… and to ensure the full implementation of the legislation for the protection and welfare of animals without further delay,” the statement concluded.
