Paphos, Lefkoniko mayors suspended over criminal investigations over abuse cases

The Interior Ministry has suspended Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos and Lefkoniko Mayor Pieris Gypsiotes pending criminal investigations into offences that carry prison sentences of more than three years if proven.

The ministry announced the suspensions after receiving information from competent authorities about prosecuting authorities’ investigations against both mayors.

Article 113 of the Municipalities Law automatically suspends elected officials under criminal investigation for offences carrying sentences of three years or more. The suspensions remain in effect until investigations are completed and cases are concluded.

The Interior Minister, currently abroad, will approve the notification for publication in an extraordinary edition of the Official Gazette tomorrow upon his return tonight. The suspensions take legal effect only after publication in the gazette.

The announcement came after police sent the Interior Ministry detailed information about offences being examined against the Paphos mayor, Director General Elikkos Elia confirmed to television stations.

Police responded one day after a woman gave multi-page testimony to investigative authorities about an alleged sexual abuse incident from 10 years ago. Paphos businessman Theodoros Aristodemou had referenced this case the day before, saying he provided names that could help the investigation.

Police are also investigating ex officio a case brought to light by Annie Alexui allegedly concerning violence against the mayor’s wife. The wife has denied the allegations and requested by letter that the investigation be terminated.

Under the law, suspended officials receive one-third of their salary during the suspension period. If acquitted or if investigations are terminated without charges, they return to their duties and receive full back pay.

If convicted, they are automatically removed from office and forfeit the withheld salary.
