Corbyn says UK base in Cyprus used to arm Israel

The British base at Akrotiri is being used as a transit station for weapons deliveries to Israel and Cyprus is becoming increasingly involved in the conflict, UK MP Jeremy Corbyn said, according to a press release by the left-wing AKEL party.

Corbyn, a member of the House of Commons, former Labour leader and co-founder of Your Party, sent the message to the Left Group in the European Parliament during their study days hosted in Cyprus.

“The British Base at Akrotiri is being used as an intermediate station for the delivery of weapons to Israel and Cyprus is becoming increasingly involved in the conflict,” Corbyn said in the message.

He called for full support for the Palestinian people’s right to live free, an end to the Israeli occupation, condemnation of what he termed genocide, and practical solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Corbyn also addressed what he described as a war economy created by the European Union under Ursula von der Leyen’s leadership, pointing to massive armaments spending and large increases in weapons industry stocks due to ongoing wars.

He highlighted the impact of austerity and free market policies across the continent, including rising poverty and social inequalities, intensifying attacks on the welfare state, and the rise of the far-right across Europe.

“We must provide answers to economic and social problems and vigorously oppose racism in any form,” Corbyn said, calling for examination of war and peace issues across the continent.
