A 55-year-old worker was killed in a fatal industrial accident in the Kofinou area on Friday afternoon.
Finis Alexandru was on the back of a truck at approximately 3.00 pm while a 51-year-old colleague was using a vehicle-mounted crane to unload concrete counterweights. Each weight weighed between two and three tonnes.
Under circumstances currently being investigated, the truck overturned to the right. Mr Alexandru was thrown to the ground and struck by one of the concrete blocks.
He was rushed by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
Police officers and officials from the Department of Labour Inspection carried out an investigation at the scene. As part of the ongoing probe, the 51-year-old man was arrested under a court warrant and remains in custody.
Kofinou Police Station and the Department of Labour Inspection are continuing their enquiries into the incident.
