January rainfall exceeds normal levels in most of Cyprus, reaching 117% of average

Average rainfall in Cyprus’s free areas exceeded normal January values, reaching 117% by January 29, the Department of Meteorology said.

The average total rainfall from January 1 reached 119.8 millimetres.

The biggest exceedance of normal monthly values was recorded in Nicosia’s Athalassa, with 85.1mm compared to the normal value of 48mm for the month, reaching 177% coverage.

High coverage rates were also recorded at Pano Panagia and Frenaros (138%), Xylotymbou (133%) and Larnaca Airport (132%).

The lowest percentages, which nevertheless remained close to average monthly values, were recorded in Limassol’s New Port at 76% and Prodromos at 89%. These are the only areas that did not cover at least 100% of average monthly rainfall, according to the Meteorological Department.

In absolute values, the highest rainfall since the start of the month was recorded at Platania with 225mm and Pano Panagia with 211.6mm. The lowest rainfall was recorded in Limassol’s New Port with 72.6mm and Xylotymbou with 79.1mm.

Compared to normal rainfall from the start of this year’s period (October 1), average rainfall to date stands at 95%, with the majority of areas close to 100%.
