Man claims abduction and assault following violent Limassol brawl

Police arrested 12 people, including two women, after a violent street brawl in the Agia Zoni area ended in a flat raid and the discovery of a man claiming to be an abduction victim.

Officers responded to reports of a fight at approximately 21:00 on Monday. While the participants had left the scene, investigators found bloodstains and a knuckle duster left behind. Following immediate enquiries, patrols tracked the suspects to a nearby apartment.

Inside the property, police located 12 suspects and a man who told officers he had been kidnapped by the group and forcibly taken to the flat, where he was beaten. Three of the suspects were taken to hospital for injuries sustained during the initial fight before being moved to the Limassol police headquarters.

Limassol Assistant Police Commissioner Lefteris Kyriakou confirmed that 11 of those in custody hold student status. All 12 appeared before the Limassol District Court on Tuesday for a remand hearing.

“The residence status of those involved will be re-examined by the competent authorities once the investigation is complete,” Kyriakou said. He added that the case file would be submitted to the Law Office to determine further action.

The clash is believed to have been triggered by personal disputes between two rival groups. Police are currently searching for four more people believed to have participated in the violence.

Kyriakou noted that while police cannot monitor every neighbourhood at all times, the arrests demonstrated an immediate response to the incident. Nightly campaigns and patrols are continuing across the city to maintain public safety, he added.

The Law Office will make the final decision regarding criminal prosecutions once the police have completed their dossiers.
