A four-year-old girl has died at the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia after suffering from multi-organ failure caused by Influenza A, medical authorities confirmed on Monday.
The child had been in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) since Saturday, when she was transferred from Limassol General Hospital in a critical, intubated state.
Despite the efforts of the medical team, the child’s condition deteriorated rapidly due to the systemic impact of the virus, leading to her death earlier this afternoon.
This winter has seen a surge in hospital admissions among minors across the Republic. Health officials at Makarios Hospital stated that the primary cause of death was multi-organ failure, a severe complication where the body’s inflammatory response to the infection begins to damage vital systems.
