Former police chief reveals past probe into Paphos mayor domestic abuse claims

Police investigated alleged domestic violence involving Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos’s wife as far back as 2018-2019, former police chief Kypros Michaelides has revealed.

Speaking on Sigma’s morning show, Michaelides said the current police decision to launch an investigation was correct but added: “Police have done very well. Perhaps it’s delayed”.

According to Michaelides, similar information about alleged assault reached police during 2018-2019. A preliminary investigation was conducted at the time, but evidence was deemed insufficient after several people were asked to give statements but refused, he said.

The case file was sent to the Law Office, which instructed police not to proceed further due to lack of testimony, according to the former chief.

Michaelides said he was aware of the earlier case and noted the matter has resurfaced with apparently more evidence, including various documents that have been presented.

Asked about medical reports published by “Annie Alexoui”, Michaelides said whilst he wouldn’t characterise them as incontrovertible evidence, they constitute a form of testimony.

The documents contain names, such as who conducted X-rays or assessments, and statements will be taken, he added.
