Paphos pushes for two new dams as existing reservoirs fail to fill despite heavy rainfall

Paphos’s existing dams have failed to fill adequately for 2026 despite heavy recent rainfall, prompting renewed calls for two new reservoirs in the district.

The call is gaining momentum following a fire that destroyed the district’s desalination plant, a fault that forced the emptying of Mavrokolymbos dam, and findings that large water quantities don’t reach existing reservoirs.

Paphos District Local Government Organisation president Charalambos Pittokopitis and MPs Velentinos Fakontis, Chrysanthos Savvides and Ilias Myrianthous have raised the issue in recent memoranda and representations.

They emphasise the necessity of constructing small dams on rivers crossing communities to stop significant water quantities ending up in the sea.

The officials argue these projects qualify for the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, noting member states can revise their project lists to prioritise critical infrastructure.
