President Christodoulides’s state of union address rescheduled to 5 February

President Nikos Christodoulides will deliver his annual state of union address on Thursday 5 February, a week later than the previous two years, to accommodate next week’s visit by the UN secretary-general’s personal envoy.

The president will review progress on the 88 government actions announced for 2025 and present the administration’s priorities for 2026 during the address, which in previous years took place on 29 January.

The date change was necessary due to María Ángela Holguín’s visit to the island next week, during which Christodoulides will meet the UN envoy on 27 January and hold a joint meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on 28 January.

A special cabinet meeting will take place at 4pm on 4 February to review implementation of the 88 government actions announced for 2025.

Christodoulides decided upon taking office to hold an annual event presenting the government’s work directly to citizens. The presidential announcements over the past two years have focused on policies affecting citizens and their quality of life, a move that may aim to counter criticism the president and government face domestically.

Both the 2024 and 2025 presentations centred on improving daily life for citizens, modernising the state and strengthening transparency. The government announcements were divided into twelve sections: economy, internal affairs, security, defence, the Cyprus issue, migration, digital transformation, education, health, environment, culture and sport.

Beyond reviewing achievements and announcing future goals, Christodoulides may use the platform to respond to a series of personal attacks he has faced recently.
