A 63-year-old man died on Thursday afternoon after the car he was driving collided with a pickup truck on Vasileos Pavlou road in Limassol, with authorities not ruling out the possibility his death was due to medical causes.
George Michael from Zakaki died after the fatal accident, which occurred around 4.30pm on Vasileos Pavlou road.
According to information from Limassol traffic police, around the middle of the road, the 63-year-old’s car, which was travelling northbound, swerved to the right under circumstances being investigated and collided head-on with a pickup truck travelling in the opposite direction, southbound.
Traffic police members rushed to the scene, whilst the driver was taken to Limassol General Hospital where his death was confirmed. Limassol traffic police are examining the possibility the accident was due to medical causes.
In statements at the scene, Limassol traffic police chief Marios Charalambous said: “This afternoon, at 4.30pm, a 63-year-old was driving a saloon car on Vasileos Pavlou road in Limassol, heading north. At some point on the road he appears to have moved to the right and collided with a pickup truck, which was being driven by a 70-year-old heading south. After the collision, the driver of the first vehicle, the saloon, appears to have been unconscious. An ambulance was informed, which took him to Limassol Hospital, where his death was confirmed.”
Asked whether the 63-year-old lost control of his vehicle due to loss of consciousness, Charalambous said they are currently investigating a traffic accident. “However, it is not ruled out that the causes may be different, namely medical,” he added.
Asked about the vehicle’s speed, he said the driver had no visible injuries and that, regarding speed, initial witness accounts do not suggest he had developed high speed. CCTV footage from the area is being evaluated from the outset, whilst the victim was wearing a seatbelt.
Investigations and examinations into the exact causes of the accident are ongoing, whilst the exact cause of the 63-year-old’s death will be determined by a post-mortem examination.
