Bill targets traffic congestion with towing powers, school zones

The House Transport Committee began reviewing a traffic bill today submitted by DISY MP Fotini Tsiridou.

The proposal would create Cyprus’s first comprehensive traffic law covering citizens’ daily life, Tsiridou said after the session.

The bill includes traffic management centres in each province, grants authorities the right to tow vehicles obstructing traffic flow, and introduces priority lanes, according to Tsiridou.

It also establishes flow zones with no stopping or parking at specified times, school protection zones around every school, and staggered working hours.

The proposal incorporates teleworking into the road decongestion framework and provides open data for all citizens with specific measurable indicators, Tsiridou said.

Tsiridou described traffic congestion as a “scourge that plagues and torments thousands of our fellow citizens daily on the roads”, adding that the proposal aims to bring order where there is chaos and rules where there are none.

All stakeholders have submitted their thoughts on the issue, she said, noting the committee has requested written submissions from all parties.

The goal is to pass Cyprus’s first umbrella law addressing citizens’ daily life with emphasis on traffic, Tsiridou said.
