Strong winds and snow forecast as Cyprus braces for unstable weather

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for unsettled conditions across Cyprus, as a weather front brings a mix of heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms, and sleet to the island’s highest peaks.

The forecast indicates that Thursday will remain predominantly overcast, with northeast to southeast winds expected to reach “gale force” in coastal areas. These winds are predicted to blow at 4 to 5 Beaufort, with gusts potentially reaching 6 to 7 Beaufort, causing “moderate to rough” sea conditions.

Temperature levels are set to remain below the seasonal average tomorrow, reaching approximately 12°C inland and 15°C along the coast. In the highest peaks of the Troodos mountains, where temperatures will hover around 6°C, the Department of Meteorology expects snowfall or sleet.

The unsettled weather will persist into Friday, though conditions are expected to be slightly more stable with only partial cloud cover and occasional showers. By Saturday, however, a secondary front is forecast to bring further local rain and thunderstorms, with snow expected once again in the mountains.

Improvement is expected by Saturday afternoon, leading into a partially cloudy but drier Sunday. According to the latest data, temperatures will begin a gradual ascent over the weekend, eventually returning to—or slightly exceeding—the median climatological values for late January.
