Cyprus has recorded 12 flu deaths since December, with five new fatalities reported today, the Health Ministry’s deputy general director said.
Elisavet Konstantinou said the five deaths announced today followed seven she had referenced last Friday, bringing the total to 12 from the start of this year’s flu season.
Flu continues to dominate Cyprus, with coronavirus appearing at much lower frequency whilst some cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have emerged, Mary Avraamidou, president of the Scientific Society of Personal and Family Doctors, told philenews.
Avraamidou warned that people with symptoms shouldn’t assume a negative first test rules out flu. Some cases have tested positive on a second test taken one day later, she said.
She stressed the need to protect vulnerable population groups, especially the elderly. People showing symptoms must isolate because they transmit the virus when they contact others, putting vulnerable people and the elderly at risk when they fall ill, Avraamidou said.
