A 33-year-old man has been remanded for eight days over an alleged cleaver attack that left his ex-wife’s new partner with a severed thumb and multiple serious injuries following a jealousy-fuelled assault.
Larnaca District Court ordered the detention yesterday after the man was arrested at midday for attempted murder of a 40-year-old man and assault on his 46-year-old ex-wife.
Police were alerted at 7:15am yesterday when the woman reported her ex-husband had entered her flat through the balcony door and attacked both her and her partner.
The suspect allegedly went to the kitchen, grabbed a cleaver and attacked the 40-year-old in various parts of his body. The victim attempted to escape through the balcony but the attacker caught him, according to examinations.
The 33-year-old then allegedly turned on his ex-wife, issuing threats against her life. She reported being chased by her ex-husband and managed to reach the building’s car park, where police found her. The suspect fled.
The 40-year-old was rushed to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors found he had suffered amputation of his left thumb, incomplete amputation of his right thumb and index finger, multiple contusion wounds on his hands, a contusion wound on his back and multiple contusion wounds on his head.
Due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

The attack appears to have been triggered by personal jealousy. According to information, the 33-year-old allegedly became enraged after discovering his ex-wife had entered a relationship with the 40-year-old.
Police are investigating offences including attempted murder, acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm, causing grievous bodily harm, carrying a knife, burglary of a residence, common assault, harassment, threat and infliction of psychological harm.
