Justice Minister orders rapid deportations and police surge after Larnaca gang clash

Justice Minister Costas Fytiris has launched a high-stakes security crackdown in Larnaca following a brazen daylight shootout that terrorised the city centre. During an emergency meeting at the Larnaca Police Headquarters with Mayor Andreas Vyras and senior police officials, the Minister announced a permanent increase in police presence and the immediate commencement of 24-hour patrols. Acknowledging that “crime has become emboldened,” Fytiris stressed that the government will be judged solely by its results in dismantling local and foreign criminal networks.

The Minister unveiled a zero-tolerance policy targeting foreign nationals involved in illegal activities, announcing fast-track deportation procedures for those who break the law. This directive coincides with a massive nationwide operation by the Aliens and Immigration Service, which has already resulted in 30 arrests across Cyprus. Fytiris made it clear that criminal organisations, whether domestic or international, will be confronted with every legal tool available to ensure public safety in both urban and rural areas.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, who previously condemned the violence as “unfit for a modern city,” demanded tangible outcomes rather than just promises. He pledged the municipality’s full cooperation with law enforcement to restore order. Meanwhile, the Justice Minister urged the public to assist authorities by providing information, even anonymously, to help bridge the gap between citizens and the police. Fytiris warned that while organised crime is a global phenomenon affecting the entire European Union, Cyprus must remain a step ahead through persistence and a reinforced front-line presence.
