Fish species face extinction as Cyprus fishing profession dies out

The fishing profession risks disappearing in Cyprus as fish stocks dwindle and some species face extinction, professional fishermen in Paphos have warned.

New technology, overfishing, sea pollution and illegal fishing are driving the decline, according to the fishermen, who say their problems in Paphos are more severe than in other districts.

They face strict time restrictions on harbour access at Kato Paphos, which they estimate drastically limits their ability to fish. The imposed hours for free access to the small harbour represent just one of several challenges squeezing the profession.

Professional fishermen also struggle with inadequate parking spaces and lack proper shelter for their Association’s needs. They stress that upgrading the entry and exit of vessels from the harbour mouth is essential, along with creating a dedicated space for selling fresh fish directly to consumers.

Sector representatives said they have submitted these requests to authorities for years without any action being taken.
