European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen toured the Green Line in Nicosia on Thursday morning, accompanied by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.
“This morning, together with President Ursula von der Leyen, we walked along the ceasefire line in Nicosia,” Christodoulides wrote on X.
“Dear Ursula, we have experienced, together, the poignant yet powerful silence of these streets. Of occupation on European territory. And witnessed the remarkable resilience of Cypriots who have endured displacement and unfathomable pain, but they persevered,” he said.
“As you often remark, our Union is a promise. And for Cyprus and all its people our Union holds the promise of reunification”.
Von der Leyen thanked the president for his hospitality in Cyprus in her own X post.
“At the heart of our shared home, the Mediterranean, Cyprus is where continents and cultures meet,” she wrote.
“So with a unique expertise in dialogue, negotiation and diplomacy, the Cyprus EU presidency will steer our European agenda in challenging times”.
