A white blanket of snow covered mountain communities in Limassol and Nicosia districts from the early morning hours of Tuesday (13 January), creating a striking winter scene. Residents woke to find rooftops, roads and trees draped in white.
Temperatures registered a noticeable drop, whilst heavy snowfall was observed from morning in some areas, hampering traffic.
Despite the low temperatures, residents enjoyed the phenomenon, which is rare for the area, capturing images of the winter landscape.
Images and videos posted on the Weather Enthusiasts of Cyprus Facebook page showed snow covering Mandria in the Limassol district, Kato Platres, Agros, Pedoulas, Palaichori and Spilia, amongst other areas.
Police said in an announcement that officers are conducting continuous patrols and checks on road network conditions. The effort focuses on early detection of any problems and taking necessary measures to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow.
Affected roads
Roads leading to Troodos (Platres-Troodos, Karvounas-Troodos and Prodromos-Troodos) are open only to vehicles equipped with snow chains or four-wheel drive due to snowfall.

The following roads are also open only to vehicles equipped with snow chains or four-wheel drive:
- Palaichori-Agros
- Farmaka-Odou
- Fterikoudhi-Alona-Platanistasa
- Alona-Polystypos
- Polystypos-Lagoudera
- Lagoudera-Chandria
Due to heavy rainfall on the Limassol-Paphos motorway in the Pissouri-Avdimou-Paramali area, drivers are urged to be particularly careful, drive at low speeds and maintain safe distances from vehicles ahead.
