Flu cases are rising across Cyprus, along with hospital admissions, and the first death has been recorded at a state hospital.
State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said the death, which occurred several days ago, involved someone from a vulnerable population group.
“We’re seeing increased winter virus activity in the community in recent days, and as a result we’re seeing more hospital admissions,” Charilaou said.
Ward occupancy currently sits at around 85-90%, he said, but “there’s no problem with hospital operations”.
This year is also seeing fewer admissions due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which last year drove up paediatric admissions. “We’re not seeing that this year,” he said.
On COVID-19, Charilaou said patients are being treated in the hospital, but numbers remain small. “We’re seeing COVID admissions year-round now, and we have the experience in treating our patients,” he said.
The SHSO spokesman said an increase in cases and admissions is expected in the coming period. He noted that Cyprus typically sees peak virus activity after the holiday season each year.
