New Year’s Day 2026 will be windy, with instability subsiding from New Year’s Eve evening, according to the Department of Meteorology.
Meteorological Officer Panagiotis Linggis said storms will continue until New Year’s Eve evening, limited to western-northern areas, and by morning will be confined to mountains and likely the occupied areas.
A colder air mass will enter on New Year’s Day with strong wind gusts mainly in western northern areas and windward western northwestern regions that may cause some problems, he added. The defining feature of New Year’s Day will not be rain but wind, he noted.
Temperature will drop further on Friday before rising on Sunday, he said.
No further rainfall is expected until Sunday, ending on New Year’s Eve, he explained.
Asked about Friday, he said there will be no wind, especially in the afternoon.
On Saturday and Sunday, Levantes (easterly winds) will blow. Clouds will form on Saturday afternoon, but generally the weather will be mainly clear without rain and winds.
The weather forecast is based on low pressure and a strengthened wind field temporarily affecting the area, according to the meteorological bulletin.
