The Meteorological Service is expected to issue weather warnings as severe weather approaches the island from Tuesday evening.
Speaking on Alpha Enimerossi, Meteorological Service spokesperson Andreas Chrysanthou said Tuesday afternoon would bring strengthened winds, building to “very strengthened wind fields, moderate to strong, temporarily strong to very strong in coastal areas and local rain and storms” by evening, starting from the west and spreading across the territory by Wednesday.
The deterioration would be significant, with intense and prolonged phenomena, Chrysanthou said.
“We may see water accumulation in storms, hail, and snow on the higher peaks of Troodos,” he said.
“Strong wind fields with rain and storms from Tuesday night, particularly in the southern, western and northern areas which may receive more intense phenomena,” the spokesperson added.
“So a new year which will enter cold from its first month,” Chrysanthou said.
This afternoon, conditions will be mainly clear with northwesterly to northerly winds, weak to moderate force 3-4 Beaufort, locally strong force 5 in the west. Seas will be slightly rough to rough on southern and eastern coasts, and rough to very rough on western and northern coasts.
Tuesday will become gradually mainly cloudy with isolated showers possible in the west during afternoon hours. Winds will blow mainly southwesterly, initially variable, weak to moderate force 3-4 Beaufort.
Seas will be up to slightly rough, though initially up to rough in the west and north. Temperatures will rise to 14C inland, around 16C on the coast and 6C in the higher mountains.
