Low pressure dominates the region, bringing a surge in wind speeds tonight before the weather deteriorates sharply from Tuesday evening. Gale-force gusts will batter the western and northern coasts, while snow is expected to settle on the highest peaks.
Violent winds and coastal surge
Winds will intensify throughout the day, shifting southwest to northwest. Coastal areas will face moderate to strong winds reaching 5 Beaufort, while the west and north will see intermittent near-gales. The sea will turn rough to very rough along these shorelines.
Daytime temperatures will peak at 15°C inland and 16°C on the coast, but the high mountains will remain cold at just 4°C, with isolated showers or sleet likely.
Storms and frost overnight
The weather turns tonight with widespread cloud cover, isolated storms, and hail, primarily in the west. Snow will fall across the higher peaks. Northwest winds will scream across the coast at up to 6 Beaufort.
Temperatures will plummet to 6°C inland and 0°C in the mountains, where frost is expected to form.
New Year’s Eve washout
Monday starts with storms and hail in the west before clearing by midday, though high winds will persist.
The real decline begins Tuesday night. Rain and storms will sweep in from the west, spreading across the island. On Wednesday, New Year’s Eve, Cyprus is expected to face a total washout with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and snow in the mountains. Winds will remain dangerously high.
While temperatures stay slightly below average through Tuesday, a minor rise is expected as the new year arrives.
