Thunderstorms hit Cyprus as Met Department lifts yellow warning (videos)

Isolated strong thunderstorms affected Cyprus from the early hours of Tuesday, initially hitting western and southern coastal areas before progressively spreading to other regions, prompting a yellow weather warning that was lifted at 9am.

The Meteorological Service forecast continued cloudy conditions with local rain and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day, with temperatures reaching 18 degrees Celsius inland, around 20 degrees on the coast and 9 degrees in the higher mountains.

Hail is possible during thunderstorms, whilst sleet or snow may fall on the highest peaks of Troodos, according to the Department of Meteorology. Winds will blow mainly northeast to southeast, light to moderate at force 3 to 4 Beaufort, with the sea up to slightly rough.

A weak low pressure system is affecting the area, with thin dust suspended in the atmosphere at intervals.

Tonight, conditions will become partly cloudy with isolated rain expected mainly in coastal areas. Winds will shift to mainly northwest to northeast, light at force 3 Beaufort, and the sea will become calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to 9 degrees inland, around 12 degrees on the coast and 4 degrees in the higher mountains, with frost possible in sheltered mountain areas.

Wednesday will see partly cloudy weather with isolated rain. Thursday and Friday will bring intervals of mainly cloudy conditions with isolated rain or thunderstorms, mainly after midday.

Temperatures through Friday are not expected to change significantly, remaining slightly above seasonal averages.
