The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning for Monday night, cautioning that heavy thunderstorms and hail are set to impact Cyprus.
The warning remains in effect from 11:00 pm on Monday, 22 December, until 9:00 am on Tuesday, 23 December. Initial activity will be concentrated along the western and southern coasts before progressively spreading inland.
Meteorologists warn that rainfall intensity could exceed 35mm per hour, accompanied by hail and strengthening winds.
The unsettled weather is driven by a system of low pressure that is also carrying sparse dust into the atmosphere. For those traveling to higher altitudes, the Department warned that temperatures will drop to 4°C on the highest peaks of the Troodos range, where sleet or snow is expected. Frost is also likely to form in sheltered mountainous areas during the early hours of Tuesday.
While the most intense conditions are expected to subside by Tuesday afternoon, the festive period will remain damp. Christmas Eve is forecast to be partially cloudy with isolated showers, while Christmas Day will likely see a continuation of unsettled weather, with afternoon thunderstorms possible across various districts.
Despite the rain, temperatures will stay relatively mild for the season, peaking at 18°C to 19°C through the end of the week.
