Woman killed on Limassol-Nicosia highway after being struck while parked in hard shoulder

A 71-year-old woman lost her life on Monday morning after being struck by a van while she was standing beside her parked vehicle in the hard shoulder of the Nicosia–Limassol motorway.

The victim, identified as Sylvia Georgiou Jones from Limassol, was hit near the Skarinou area at approximately 10:40 am. According to police reports, Jones had parked her private car in the safety lane and was in the process of either entering or exiting the driver’s side when a van travelling toward Limassol struck her.

Emergency services transported Jones to Larnaca General Hospital with critical injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she was pronounced dead at 11:50 am.

The driver of the van, a 64-year-old private employee from Nicosia, remained at the scene following the collision. Police confirmed that he underwent preliminary breathalyser and drug tests, both of which returned negative results.

Larnaca Traffic Police have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision. The accident caused temporary disruption on the motorway as investigators processed the scene.
