Cyprus reports 328 violations of air space by Turkey to UN Security Council

Cyprus has reported extensive Turkish air and naval violations to the UN Security Council, detailing 328 air incursions and 16 naval breaches during July and August 2025.

The Security Council President distributed a letter from Cyprus’s Permanent Mission dated 8 December to council members. The letter states that 93 of the 328 air violations involved Turkish unmanned military aircraft and 56 were carried out by armed military fighter jets.

Nicosia describes the actions as yet another clear violation of Cyprus’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, reflecting Turkey’s customary flagrant disregard for the UN Charter and international law, according to the letter.

The violations included breaches of national airspace, the Nicosia FIR and territorial waters, as well as the illegal use of closed ports and airports by Turkish forces.

Cyprus also raised concerns about almost daily entries into the dead zone and the strengthening of military infrastructure in occupied areas. The letter characterises these as part of Turkey’s persistent aggressive behaviour aimed at creating new fait accomplis.

Such practices undermine the sense of security of all Cypriots and efforts to resume negotiations, according to the mission.

Despite the challenges, Cyprus said it remains absolutely committed to close cooperation with the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to create the necessary conditions for resuming talks. The letter reiterated that the sought solution is a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality as provided for by the United Nations.

The Cypriot mission requested the letter and accompanying documents be circulated as official documents of the 80th Session of the General Assembly under the Cyprus question and of the Security Council.
