Father charged after 13-year-old son seriously injured in Athienou crash

A 40-year-old father has been charged after his 13-year-old son was seriously injured whilst driving the family car in Athienou on Sunday.

The man was arrested on Monday and questioned before being formally charged and released. He will be summoned to the Larnaca District Court at a later date, police said.

Larnaca Police spokesman Spyros Chrysostomou said police are investigating the father for unsafe custody of a vehicle, allowing an unlicensed person to drive, and allowing an uninsured vehicle to be driven.

According to the investigation, the 40-year-old is the boy’s father and the owner and custodian of the car the teenager was driving.

The crash happened around 10.30am on Sunday on a dirt agricultural road in Larnaca district. The 13-year-old lost control of the vehicle under circumstances still being investigated, police said. The car veered off the road, struck trees, and overturned in an adjacent field.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital before being transferred to Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Strovolos, where he remains hospitalised.

His condition is serious but he is out of danger, according to information police received from treating doctors.
