Stolen motorbike found in National Guard storage linked to July assassination attempt

Investigators have uncovered new evidence potentially linked to a planned crime in the case of the attempted murder of a well-known 47-year-old man on the morning of 31 July in the Dromolaxia Industrial Area.

Police found a motorbike in a National Guard depot in Nicosia district in the past 24 hours, according to Ant1 reports. The depot was searched following information given to police headquarters, and other evidence was discovered alongside the motorbike.

According to Philenews sources, the 22-year-old accused of attempting to murder the 47-year-old reportedly had access to the depot, and police are investigating whether he stole the keys. The motorbike was determined to have been recently stolen from Limassol.

Earlier today, the 22-year-old National Guard contract soldier was committed for trial before Larnaca Permanent Assize Court, which will sit on 13 January. The accused faces serious charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of explosives, theft and receiving stolen property.

Beyond the testimony that led to his arrest, the young man was linked scientifically through DNA to a neck warmer that fell from the perpetrator during his escape from the attempted murder scene.

Additionally, videos appear to have been found on his mobile phone showing he was tracking the 47-year-old target after the attempted murder.

In these videos he reportedly recorded locations where the 47-year-old moves and made voice descriptions. Police are investigating whether these videos were sent to anyone, given that examinations continue to identify the mastermind.

Police arrested the 22-year-old on 17 November in a car park in Larnaca. At his home they found a 9mm pistol, ammunition, two human-shaped masks and four mobile phones. According to sources, the pistol was not linked to any criminal activity.

The attempted murder was carried out shortly after 11am on 31 July when the 47-year-old was heading by bicycle from the Dromolaxia Industrial Area towards the Krasa area.

At some point, according to what he told police, he heard gunshots and saw a person riding a scooter shooting towards him. The suspect then left the scooter behind and fled on foot. The 47-year-old was not injured.
