Kykkos Monastery holds all-night vigil, calls for prayers to end drought

The Kykkos Bishopric has decided to hold an all-night vigil and a procession of the Virgin Mary of Kykkos icon in response to the current drought in Cyprus.

The Metropolis announced that an All-night Vigil will be held on Friday evening, followed by a procession of the Eleousa of Kykkos icon, to the Throni of the Virgin Mary on Saturday morning, where a special supplication will be held.

Monks and Metropolitan to lead prayers

The official announcement from the Kykkos Monastery states that due to the prolonged drought, which has caused “catastrophic consequences for our land,” an All-night Vigil (Vespers, Midnight Office, Matins, and Divine Liturgy) will be celebrated on the night of Friday, 21 November, to Saturday, 22 November.

During the service, prayers and supplications will be offered to the Most Holy Theotokos (Virgin Mary), asking her to intercede with her compassionate Son and God “to show mercy and give us peaceful rains for the refreshment and fruitfulness of the earth.”

After the Divine Liturgy on Saturday morning, around 9:00 a.m., a procession of the miraculous Holy Icon of the Eleousa of Kykkos will proceed to the Throni of the Virgin Mary, where a special prayer service will be held.

Kykkos Bishop Nikiforos will preside over the entire service and the procession, assisted by the fathers of the monastery and other clergy.

The faithful are invited to participate in the entire service, which will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, 21 November, so that “with one voice and one heart, clergy and people, we may implore our God to grant us the longed-for rainfall.”
