The twenty six year old succumbed to his injuries during the early hours at at private hospital ICU in Limassol and has now been named as Alexandros Antoniou from Paphos. He was repeatedly stabbed early Wednesday evening by a 58 year old, already in custody and now facing charges of premeditated murder after being re-arrested by the local CID this morning following due process.
He was subsequently remanded in custody for eight days by the district court in Paphos. An autopsy will be performed on he body early this afternoon by coroner Nicholas Charalambous.
The incident took place at 1815 outside a kiosk on a central street of the Konia community, outside Paphos. Under circumstances yet to be established, the two men faced off and following a verbal altercation, the 58 year old allegedly drew a knife and caused severe injuries to Antoniou.
According to witness testimony and CCTV, it appears that the young man took the first blows while in the driver’s seat with the perpetrator then leaning over the front passenger seat and stabbing the victim across the torso.
The crime was a result of personal differences, following the separation of the 26 year old from the alleged perpetrator’s daughter. The woman had reported harassment by the victim hours before the fatal altercation in Konia, with Antoniou allegedly also scratching her car.
Phone records that will be released this weekend, are expected to disclose further information on what transpired in the critical hours prior to the killing, while CCTV footage from the area will facilitate the work of investigators, who are currently taking testimony from dozens of locals, drivers passing through and people in the inner circle of both men.
