The number of Cyprus residents who traveled both domestically and abroad increased by 30.8% in 2024 compared to 2023, according to data published today by the Statistical Service.
In 2024, 543,526 residents took at least one overnight trip either within or outside Cyprus for personal reasons, marking a 9.1% increase compared to the 498,026 residents who travelled in 2023.
Domestic and international travel trends
- Total Trips (Domestic and International): The number of people who traveled both within and outside Cyprus rose by 30.8% in 2024, reaching 209,411 individuals.
- Domestic-Only Travel: The number of residents who took trips only within Cyprus increased by 5.2%, reaching 164,590 in 2024 (up from 156,510 in 2023).
- International-Only Travel: The number of residents who took trips only abroad decreased by 6.6%, totalling 169,525 (down from 181,428 in 2023).
Domestic Trips
The total number of domestic trips increased by 3.5%, from 1,564,359 trips in 2023 to 1,619,371 in 2024.
- Purpose: 98.5% of domestic trips were for personal reasons (rest and recreation, visiting relatives/friends, health, pilgrimage, etc.), while 1.5% were for business reasons.
- Accommodation: 51.2% of domestic trips used rented accommodation (hotels, campsites, guesthouses, etc.), while 48.8% used non-rented accommodation (own home, staying with relatives/friends, etc.).
International Trips
The total number of international trips increased by 4.3% in 2024, reaching 1,747,492 (up from 1,674,725 in 2023).
- Purpose: 86.4% of international trips were for personal reasons, and 13.6% were for business reasons.
- Accommodation: 72.7% of international trips used rented accommodation, while 27.3% used non-rented accommodation.
Expenditure
Total expenditure for travel, both domestic and international, saw increases in 2024.
- Domestic Trip Expenditure: Total expenditure within Cyprus reached €300.1 million in 2024, an increase of 2.5% compared to 2023.
- Accommodation expenses accounted for the largest share (37.4%).
- Food and beverages at restaurants and cafes accounted for 35.8%.
- Transport accounted for 9.2%, and other expenses accounted for 17.6%.
- International Trip Expenditure: Total expenditure for trips abroad reached €2,070.9 million in 2024, an increase of 6.7% compared to 2023.
- Transport expenses made up the largest share (34.8%).
- Food and beverages at restaurants and cafes accounted for 24.2%.
- Accommodation expenses accounted for 23.6%, and other expenses accounted for 17.4%.
