Sizopoulos fights back against corruption charges: ‘I discovered the forgery myself’

MP and former EDEK president Marinos Sizopoulos told philenews he will issue a statement regarding allegations against him and other Taxan Properties shareholders in an Independent Authority Against Corruption report.

Sizopoulos told Philenews he has a scheduled trip abroad tomorrow and will call a press conference after returning to Cyprus early next week. “I will present all the evidence,” he said, adding he will first study the report.

In subsequent statements to various media outlets, Sizopoulos appeared to completely dispute the report and denied any involvement. He said he was the one who discovered the signature forgery and made a complaint to police.

MP challenges authority’s jurisdiction

When asked if the case would reach court, Sizopoulos replied “no problem”, emphasising he has all the evidence.

Sizopoulos said he reserves every legal right and will therefore request authorities investigate two matters: whether the Authority had the right to investigate this specific case and whether it has the right to publish the report.

Corruption findings detail alleged fraud scheme

The investigating officers’ findings appointed by the Authority concern data that Taxan shareholders presented to a bank for loan settlement. Specifically, an Iraqi investor’s signature was allegedly forged, according to testimony they collected.

Officers appointed by the Independent Authority Against Corruption determined there are potential criminal offences including fraud, forgery, fabrication of false documents, circulation of false documents and conspiracy to defraud.

The investigation stems from a loan settlement arrangement that was resolved following the write-off of €956,900.
