Some traffic camera fines to drop from €300 to €85

The government is set to reduce traffic fines for stopping on pedestrian crossings from €300 to €85 following parliamentary approval of legislation proposed by Nicosia MP Marinos Mousiouttas.

The Electromechanical Services Department issued instructions to the contractor on 26 May 2025 to implement the system modifications, following approval from TEAA and KEAA contract management bodies and police confirmation of available funding.

Department Director confirmed necessary resources have been secured for implementing the legislative changes. Payment to the contractor will occur in two phases: upon completion of modifications at the first crossing, and upon full project completion.

New €85 penalty replaces €300 fine for stopping violations

The pilot implementation is scheduled to begin in late November 2025, with police and the Electromechanical Services Department selecting the first modified intersection within the month. Full system deployment across all intersections equipped with traffic cameras and pedestrian crossings is expected by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The reduced penalty specifically targets violations for stopping on pedestrian crossings, representing a significant decrease from the previous €300 fine structure.

Authorities confirmed funding arrangements are in place to support the technical modifications required for the new penalty structure implementation.

Pilot programme launches late November with full rollout by March 2026

The pilot implementation at the first intersection will enable technical testing and necessary system adjustments without affecting the broader camera network. This approach allows authorities to evaluate proper system functioning and ensure accurate violation recording as specified in legislation.

Technical testing during the pilot phase will assess system performance and verify that violation recording operates correctly under the new penalty framework.

The phased approach enables systematic evaluation of modifications before full-scale deployment across Cyprus’s traffic camera network. Authorities will monitor system performance and make necessary adjustments during the pilot period.

Full implementation across all relevant intersections will provide comprehensive coverage of the reduced penalty system by March 2026.
