Police have arrested a 32-year-old Greek Cypriot man on suspicion of deliberately setting a fire in the Troodos region on Wednesday (4 September), following examination of evidence and witness testimony.
The suspect was detained under judicial warrant and will appear before Limassol District Court on Monday for a remand hearing, police confirmed Sunday.
Investigators discovered solid petroleum at the fire scene, which authorities believe arsonists used to ignite the blaze. Police collected the flammable material for forensic examination.
Solid petroleum evidence links suspect to deliberate fire
The fire near Platres was extinguished by a civilian before fire vehicles from Moniatis arrived at the scene. Firefighters and Forestry Department personnel subsequently discovered the petroleum evidence, immediately indicating arson.
The incident has heightened concerns within the Fire Service and Forestry Department, which possess intelligence regarding planned arsonist activities in both Limassol and Paphos districts. Recent fires have erupted during the evening when human activity is minimal and in locations distant from roads, officials noted.
Following the arrest, authorities are increasing patrols throughout the Troodos region.
The Fire Service reports receiving information about planned arsonist operations targeting both Limassol and Paphos.
Authorities are investigating the case.
