Cyprus welcomes Khassim Diagne as new UNFICYP chief

The United Nations has appointed Khassim Diagne from Senegal as the new Special Representative and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), government spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis announced on Wednesday.

Diagne replaces Colin Stewart in the role and brings more than 25 years of experience in international affairs and senior positions within the UN system, Letympiotis told reporters at the Presidential Palace during a media briefing.

The new appointee currently serves as interim UN Coordinator for Development and Humanitarian Affairs in Mali, a position he has held since October 2024, the spokesman said.

“The Republic of Cyprus welcomes the appointment of Mr Diagne and looks forward to close and constructive cooperation with him within the framework of the United Nations mission in Cyprus,” Letympiotis stated.

The UN Secretary-General’s decision was announced on 3 September 2025, marking the latest leadership change for the peacekeeping mission that has operated on the divided island since 1964.

UNFICYP maintains a buffer zone between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot areas following the 1974 Turkish invasion that divided the island.

When asked about the expected arrival of UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus María Ángela Holguín, Letympiotis said her visit had been rescheduled to occur before the President of the Republic travels to New York.

“We have been informed that Ms Holguín’s visit to our country has been rescheduled. Further information regarding the date of her arrival in Cyprus and her meetings will be provided through official UN announcements,” the spokesman said.
