Nicosia water supply restored after pipeline failures

Water supply has been restored to most areas of Nicosia province following repairs to a damaged Water Development Department (WDD) pipeline that cut supplies to several districts including Lakatamia, Tserio, Anthoupoli, Deftera and Ergates.

Most areas now have water supply, though some houses – mainly apartment buildings on higher ground – remain without water due to empty reservoirs, WDD Deputy Director Elena Foinikaridou told Philenews.

Authorities expect water supply to return to all affected areas during Friday night, according to official estimates.

Three separate faults cause cascading water shortages

The water disruption resulted from three consecutive failures over three days. Scheduled maintenance work on a pipeline occurred on 26 August 2025, followed by a fault in another pipeline section on 27 August that caused leakage, Foinikaridou explained.

“The fault was repaired on the evening of the same day. However, yesterday 28/8/2025, in the morning another fault occurred in an EAC cable that supplied the pumping station” which pumped water to Nicosia Water Board reservoirs, she said.

The electrical fault was repaired by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) from yesterday afternoon, she added.

High demand requires time for Water Board reservoirs to refill before community distribution tanks can be replenished, Foinikaridou said. “We as WDD supply water to the Water Board and distribution occurs through community networks,” she explained.

High-altitude areas await overnight supply restoration

Nicosia Water Board General Director Konstantinos Parmaklis said the three faults created “cascading effects” and water supply problems, whilst increased demand depleted water reserves in storage tanks.

“Water supply is gradually returning first to communities at low altitude and subsequently to higher areas. Efforts are being made to direct water to areas at higher altitude. We hope that if there is no mismanagement, tonight during the night all reservoirs will be filled,” Parmaklis said.

When some users overconsume water, they prevent supply from reaching higher elevation points, he explained.

Parmaklis appealed to residents in affected areas “not to engage in unnecessary consumption” to allow water distribution to remaining areas without restored supply.

The WDD supplies water to the Water Board, which handles distribution through individual community networks across the affected Nicosia province districts.
