The Greek Ministry of Education has authorised the University of Nicosia (UNIC) to establish UNIC Athens, its non-profit branch/campus in Greece, in a decision which strengthens UNIC’s long-standing academic partnership with the country.
According to a press release, UNIC Athens will welcome its inaugural class in Fall 2025 at a purpose-designed campus in the area of Ellinikon, Athens.
The University of Nicosia is Cyprus’s largest research university in terms of student enrolment and has enrolled more Greek students than any university outside of Greece in the past decade. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2025, UNIC is in the same rankings band as the highest ranked Greek public university, the press release noted.
UNIC Athens academic programmes
UNIC has submitted to the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE) nine (9) undergraduate programmes for accreditation, to be offered by UNIC Athens targeting an October 2025 start date: Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Data Science, Psychology, Business Administration, Accounting, and Marketing Management. Additionally, it aims to have two (2) postgraduate programmes (MBA and PhD in Medical Sciences) accredited with a target launch in 2026.
Over time, UNIC will introduce at UNIC Athens a comprehensive set of academic programmes at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.
UNIC Athens Medical School hospitals
The UNIC Medical School has a broad partnership with the Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG), which will serve as its exclusive university hospital network in Greece. HHG’s flagship hospitals, including Hygeia, Metropolitan General, Metropolitan Hospital and Mitera, will serve as UNIC Athens’ base for clinical teaching and clinical research.
The Ellinikon campus
UNIC Athens will be the only university campus operating within the €8 billion The Ellinikon smart city, with a reserved 75,000 m² of buildable space for teaching/learning, research, and student residences, enabled by AI, robotics, and wellness technologies.
For the Fall 2025 semester, a purpose-renovated 12,500 m² campus, adjacent to The Ellinikon has been constructed for UNIC Athens. This facility houses infrastructure for teaching/learning, health and life sciences research, and clinical skills development. It is expected to be the first LEED-certified university building in Greece.
The subsequent phases of the UNIC Athens campus within The Ellinikon project are targeted for completion in 2028 and 2031, respectively.
Research and innovation
UNIC Athens will be a key site for UNIC’s flagship “Evolve” Research and Innovation initiative. UNIC Evolve is focused on how Artificial Intelligence can be used to improve the human condition, with a particular focus on healthspan and longevity. UNIC Athens will be announcing in Fall 2025 further partnerships relating to this important research area.
