German Medical Institute creates Cyprus’s first AI medical testing centre

Cyprus’s German Medical Institute is establishing an AI testing and validation hub as part of its Agora 3.0 digital transformation project, with planned partnerships in India’s healthcare innovation market, according to a press release.

Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides conducted a second review visit to assess progress on the Research and Innovation Foundation-funded initiative, which aims to create Cyprus’s first fully digitalised hospital.

Professor Constantinos Zamboglou, Medical Director of the German Medical Institute, said the facility had invested in an AI-ready supercomputer and established Cyprus’s first dedicated AI department for medical diagnosis testing and development.

“Agora 3.0 is now entering its next phase — becoming an AI Testing and Validation Hub,” Zamboglou stated. “This unique platform will provide a secure, real-world environment for testing novel AI-powered medical devices and tools, giving Cypriot patients early access to cutting-edge technologies.”

The hub will serve international AI companies seeking EU market entry via Cyprus, offering regulatory support including CE certification pathways, according to institute officials.

The project has launched GMIC, its first spin-off company, establishing collaborations with partners in Bulgaria, Serbia, Germany and the United States, including Stanford University.

Zamboglou will travel to India from 16-19 September as part of a Cypriot delegation attending the ICC Global Business Summit. The German Medical Institute plans to sign memoranda of understanding with Indian AI startup ARIA Matrix and Tata Memorial Cancer Centre.

“This step is of strategic importance as it is the first step in building a presence in the Indian healthcare innovation market,” Zamboglou said, describing the partnership with Tata Memorial as collaboration with “one of the world’s elite cancer research organisations.”

Skourides described the commercialisation focus as “a game-changer for the Cypriot economy, creating new jobs, opportunities, and improved healthcare conditions for all Cypriots.”

The partnerships follow recent meetings between Cyprus President Christodoulides and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
