Nicosia Municipal Swimming Pool undergoes major interior renovation with €1.9m upgrade

Nicosia Municipal Swimming Pool continues its upgrade programme, with interior building spaces set for demolition and renovation alongside energy efficiency improvements, following earlier refurbishment of external areas and pools.

The related tender has been announced with a budget of €1.9 million excluding VAT, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund. Nicosia Municipality aims to complete work starting within the coming months by next summer when the pool reopens.

Closed since September 2021

The swimming pool, popularly known as “Lellos pool”, suspended operations in September 2021 due to necessary facility renovations, reopening to the public in June 2025.

Extensive demolition and reconstruction planned

According to tender documents, work will include demolitions, electrical and mechanical installations, plus installation of a new panoramic lift.

Specific demolition work includes:

  • Removing the metal roof of the central ground floor internal courtyard
  • Removing all ground floor and first floor doors and windows
  • Demolishing all ground floor sanitary facilities
  • Demolishing all ground floor internal partition walls, both built and dry construction, whilst retaining external walls and concrete columns
  • Removing all internal wall finishes remaining on ground floor
  • Removing all flooring internally and externally at building entrances, including substrate
  • Demolishing existing internal staircase and concrete foundations
  • Demolishing three ground floor circular columns supporting the existing metal roof and their foundations
  • Demolishing all sanitary facilities and ceramics on first floor walls and floors, including substrates
  • Demolishing selected internal partition walls and some external walls on first floor

Comprehensive building systems overhaul

Additional work encompasses:

  • Removing all mechanical and electrical installations from the building and all floor slabs
  • Removing all finishes and substrates from existing flat roofs on ground and first floors
  • Removing waterproofing systems from all concrete roof slabs
  • Removing all existing external renders and elements affecting proper thermal facade application
  • Installing new access stairs to roofs where necessary, maintaining or replacing existing stairs in good condition

The renovation represents a comprehensive transformation of the facility’s interior while maintaining the building’s structural integrity through retention of external walls and concrete columns.
