Audit Office urges halt to “unlawful payments” for state officials

Τhe Audit Οffice has issued an appeal to the Treasury of the Republic, urging an immediate cessation of salary and pension payments to officials.

According to a letter submitted by the Audit Office, these payments are being made in violation of the law.

Speaking on CyBC3, Marios Petrides, the spokesperson for the Audit Office, disclosed that they have identified a total of 25 cases where salaries and pensions are being disbursed unlawfully.

Petridis noted the necessity of putting an end to this alleged illegality, pointing out that, as per current legislation, the pension of officials should be suspended the moment they assume a secondary position in the Republic.

He underscored that unless the existing legislation is found to be unconstitutional, it must be strictly enforced.

Responding to queries regarding the possibility of officials refunding the money, the spokesperson for the Audit Office clarified that retroactive recovery of funds from the state is prohibited once a reasonable time has elapsed.
