Cultural organisers are already looking ahead to the New Year’s agenda, and Limassol’s Rialto Theatre has a January programme filled with local theatre, dance and music productions nested in between a few international evenings.
The first production of the year will be Dionysus Theatre’s adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play Uncle Vanya. Taking place in 19th-century rural Russia, the play is a shocking reflection of human fate, beyond time and space and theatre-loving audiences will get to witness it on January 3. On the following night, a concert with renowned Greek songwriter Miltos Paschalidis will take place as he returns to Rialto’s stage after several years.
On January 10, William Shakespeare’s best-known play Romeo & Juliet will be broadcast from London as part of the NT Live programme, featuring a cast of renowned theatre actors. Two days later, a concert in the form of an album presentation will take place as songwriter Sais presents his new work. Titled Colours, the performance is a collaboration between the singer and Cypriot poet and writer Yiorgos Papaconstantinou, who wrote the same-titled play in the Cypriot dialect. Each song represents a colour from the palette of humanity.
On January 14, Antilogos Theatre will present the classic literary masterpiece Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes in Greek. Mid-January will be dedicated to the acclaimed Cypriot pianist and composer Nicolas Economou. The Cultural Division of AKEL will present a tribute night on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death with pianists Ourania Menelaou and Manolis Neofytou performing live.
The second half of January will be just as eventful. Concerts by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, performances with 200 guitars on stage, operas from The Met and music by Alkinoos Ioannides are on the horizon, making the first month of the year a busy one!
