A company in Limassol has fallen victim to online cheats operating out of Chile by ordering meat and losing thousands of euro, the police said on Saturday.
The case is being investigate in cooperation with Interpol.
Limassol CID spokesman Lefteris Kyriakou said a 68-year-old reported the incident on Friday.
According to the report, the company owner found a company in Chile that was producing port products that he contacted and agreed to deliver meat to Cyprus. After placing the order, he deposited €45,982 in a bank account in Chile as a deposit.
After he made the payment he said not only did the meat not arrive but it proved impossible to have any contact with the company in Chile, at which point he realised he had been cheated.
“From investigations, we have established the money had been transferred to an unknown account and investigations are underway in cooperation with Interpol to locate the people involved in this scam,” Kyriakou said.
