Cypriot holiday travel surges; top destinations

Cypriot holidaymakers are embarking on increased journeys this Christmas and New Year, a trend reminiscent of the bustling summer season.

Anticipation is high that these holiday travels will surpass the record set in 2019. President of the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA), Haris Papacharalambous, revealed that popular destinations, including Greece, Great Britain, and various European countries, remain steadfast choices for Cypriot travellers.

Indications suggest that the number of trips abroad by Cypriots in 2023 is poised to exceed the previous peak of 1.3-1.4 million trips recorded in 2019.

Addressing concerns about heightened workloads during this period, Papacharalambous assured that, as we approach the final week of Christmas, the bulk of reservations has already been efficiently handled.

He cautioned those yet to secure reservations that finding available seats on flights or accommodation options may prove challenging, and those who succeed may face steep price tags.

Papacharalambous explained the existence of prearranged travel packages where agents have secured specific seats at fixed prices, emphasising that these rates remain unchanged.

For those opting to create customised packages with different flights or destinations lacking pre-purchased seats, prices are subject to fluctuations based on market availability, he added.

Contrary to significant price changes, Papacharalambous noted that the overall cost of trips reflects the general inflationary trend across various sectors, contributing to the notable increase in Cypriot travel.

He attributed the surge in Cypriot journeys to the expanded list of destinations, citing improved connectivity and winter as influential factors compared to the travel landscape of 2019.

When questioned about the preferred destinations during this festive season, Papacharalambous highlighted enduring choices such as Greece and Great Britain, with European capitals and cities gaining popularity, particularly in winter.

While longer journeys to the Far East are also on the radar, they constitute a smaller percentage of overall preferences.

Papacharalambous concluded, “We remain traditional in our preferences, considering that choices are influenced by available flights. Destinations with direct flights take precedence, especially for those planning shorter 4-day trips.”
