Members of the sports’ ethics committee convened on Wednesday to review the current situation following the disclosure of red notice findings regarding match fixing.
An announcement released by the committee clarified that certain matters remain pending due to the restriction outlined in Law 180(1)/2017, which prevents the committee from investigating some potentially crucial aspects arising from the red notice findings.
The central issue revolves around whether the existence of red notices and their handling by the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) have in any way influenced the conduct of the football championship.
“The matter of whether the championship was influenced or not warrants further investigation and may constitute the subject of an independent inquiry,” the committee’s statement said.
“However, it should be noted that, in our opinion, existing legislation does not cover acts of manipulating the championship as a whole.”
The committee has already finalised efforts to amend the law. In the event that the parliament approves the proposed amendments, it will decide, under the new law, whether to order an investigation into the manipulation of the championship, always in connection with the red notices case.
