UN envoy ‘to be announced very soon’

A UN envoy for the Cyprus problem will be announced very soon, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday, adding that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to make his choice on the matter.

“The UN Secretary-General has said that he has decided to move forward with appointing an envoy very soon. It is something we welcome, and we want a person to be appointed by the UNSG as soon as possible to start examining if their can be a restart of negotiations [of the Cyprus problem],” he said after a cabinet meeting.

He added that during a phone conversation with the UNSG, the president expressed the government’s will to restart negotiations as soon as possible.

Commenting further, he said that that was evident from the Greek Cypriot side’s acceptance of the last person pegged to be the UN envoy that the Turkish Cypriot side rejected.

Reports from the north at the time said that Australian Julie Bishop had been rejected based on her nationality.
