The foreign ministry has urged caution to Cypriot citizens living in Russia, following the latest developments in the country.
In a written statement, the ministry recommended that Cypriots in Russia follow the news as well as the instructions of the country’s authorities and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in the southern regions of the country.
Those who wish to contact the Embassy of Cyprus can call the consulate and embassy in Moscow on +79855558494, in Saint Petersburg on + 79313034743, the Krasnodar on + 79313034743 and the consulate general in Yekaterinburg on + 79126088172.
The announcement came as heavily armed Russian mercenaries pulled out of the southern Russian city of Rostov overnight after halting their advance on Moscow. Reuters reported this was achieved thanks to a deal that defused an unprecedented challenge to the authority of President Vladimir Putin.
Under the deal, mediated by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, fighters of the Wagner group would return to base in return for guarantees for their safety and their leader and former Putin ally, Yevgeny Prigozhin, would move to Belarus.
Earlier, Moscow deployed soldiers in preparation for their arrival and told residents to stay indoors.
