More and more migrants trying to leave Cyprus using forged travel documents have ended up in Nicosia Central Prison over the past recent months, according to Philenews.
Insiders also said the Police recently investigated 11 cases of forged documents where foreigners – mainly from the African state of Congo – showed up at one of the two airports in Cyprus with the intention of flying to either France or Belgium.
In particular, 50 foreigners were sentenced to ten months in prison for the crime of forgery or possession of forged documents in the past couple of months. And another 25 are in prison pending their trial.
Police are sending out the message the practice of forging documents is unnecessary considering that one way or another they will be deported upon arrest.
