The Code of Conduct by the island’s Police paving the way for enhanced support and rights for victims of crime was presented before the House Human Rights Committee on Monday.
This is what Philenews reported on Tuesday, adding that the Code will enable the better implementation of the relevant law which was passed in 2016 and recently amended.
Police Force representative Natasa Antoniou also told MPs that the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Office’s aim is for the Code “to create a framework within which members of the Police should act when handling victims of crime.”
The Code will basically guide force members into properly executing their duties, she added.
The issue of victims’ rights is under discussion by te relevant Committee since the summer of 2021 following a proposal by chairman Irini Charalambides of main opposition Akel party.
Charalambides pointed out that “the proposed final legislation to be approved will also concern the relatives of victims and provide for integrated structures on behalf of the State for the assistance, psychological support, information and briefing of those affected by the competent authorities for everything that will concern the path of investigations.”
The amended bill is expected to go before the plenum for approval shortly.
