Energy Minister: Cyprus should begin exporting first natural gas by 2026-2027

Minister of Energy Natasa Pilides has said that ‘realistically’ Cyprus should begin exporting its first natural gas by 2026-2027.

In an interview with Greek newspaper ‘To Vima’ on Sunday Pilides also said the ENI/Total consortium is drafting a specific plan on how their finds offshore Cyprus should be exploited.

The plan which has set has deadlines also outlines the opportunities and ways to export the natural gas.

The submitted plan by the international energy companies will determine the Cyprus government’s own decisions, she also said.

On Sunday, President Nicos Anastasiades sent the message that, despite Turkey’s threats and continued violations within the Mediterranean island’s Exclusive Economic Zone, Cyprus continues to implement its energy programme.

And that discussions will be held with the EU to include Cyprus in plans for the bloc’s energy independence following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Last week Italy’s ENI energy giant announced a further gas find in block 6 offshore Cyprus.

Block 6 is operated by Eni Cyprus with a 50 per cent stake, and TotalEnergies as a partner.

Preliminary estimates indicate about 2.5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas in place.
